We are six days away from witnessing the fight of the century between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.

Having made the switch from UFC to boxing, McGregor goes into the fight as the underdog having not fought a professional boxing match in his career.

But, with Mayweather having not fought since September 2015, there are questions marks as to whether he can replicate the all-conquering form that saw him go 49-0 in what has been an extraordinary boxing career.

It is therefore sure to be a truly fascinating encounter.

But, the attention has already switched to a potential rematch, with both fighters having discussed the prospect of a second fight in recent times.

In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Mayweather even hinted at the prospect of making an appearance in the Octagon to contest a rematch with the Irishman.

Although McGregor did not see the discussion, he has revealed that he would relish the prospect of fighting Mayweather in the sport in which he made his name.

The Dublin fighter stated: “I didn’t watch – I didn’t hear the Jimmy Kimmel bit – but I got some snippets of it that someone sent – I got tagged in some stuff, but I didn’t really hear much of what he said.

"As far as what he said on the world tour, he said he would step into the octagon.”

McGregor also commented that Mayweather would have earned his respect if they were to contest a rematch in the Octagon.

The Irishman added: "If he would do that he would have my respect.

"Anyone that’s willing to step into a game like that where the limitations are so short, deserves respect.

"And that’s at all levels whether it’s at club level in a small hall, or a big stadium, it’s still full of fans.

"If you get into that game or any combat sport game for that matter. I’ll be here to grant him his rematch."

Regardless of the outcome, McGregor will retain the UFC Lightweight belt; a title he earned by conquering Eddie Alvarez in November 2016.

And he has confirmed his intentions to return to the sport in which he has made his name after the fight with Mayweather.

McGregor said: "Right now we’re focused on putting him away August 26 and then we’ll see what happens after that.

"I also have multiple world titles to defend inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

"Maybe he can come over and after he gets his ass whooped, he can try and challenge for my lightweight belt."

As things stand, there is no rematch clause involved between Mayweather and McGregor, meaning the fight in six days time may be the only contest we get to see between the two.

However, if the bout between the two turns out to be highly successful, it sounds like there is a real possibility that a potential rematch may take place in the Octagon.

What a spectacle that would be.
