Barcelona are considering a move for one of Tottenham's star men, according to the Independent's Sports Editor Ed Malyon.

The Catalan giants have reportedly given up on Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho, after the Reds refused to budge on their firm stance.

Coutinho, 25, handed in a transfer request by e-mail but will now look to repair his relationship at the club who refused to sell him.

Barcelona, linked heavily to Jean Michael Seri and Ousmane Dembele, are desperately trying to spend the €222m Neymar's sale to PSG brought in.

The French club triggered his release clause and Barca could do nothing to convince the skilful Brazilian to stay at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona recently splashed out €40m on Paulinho, following the similarly not-so-inspiring earlier summer signings of Gerard Deulofeu and Nelson Semedo.

They're still hopeful of bringing in a marquee signing before the transfer window closes on September 1st.

Borussia Dortmund's 20-year-old superstar Ousmane Dembele is the name on everyone's lips but they have reportedly sounded out Tottenham's Christian Eriksen since missing out on Coutinho.

According to the Independent, the La Liga giants have attempted to learn of Eriksen's potential desire to leave North London for Barcelona.

The 25-year-old Danish midfielder joined Spurs from Ajax in 2013 and has been a key first team player ever since.

Eriksen has begun the 2017/18 campaign in fine form, bagging three assists in the opening two Premier League games.

He was asked about links to Barcelona by BBC 5Live last week but labelled the interest as "just rumours".

“It’s nothing," said Eriksen. "Ever since I’ve played football and been scouted the first few times I’ve been linked away, to every corner of the world.

“They’re a great club of course and it means you’re doing a good thing (to get noticed) and it means you need to keep going until you see or hear something.

“Until then it’s just rumours so it’s nothing to comment about really.”

Capped 69 times by his country, Eriksen is a popular figure for both club and country.

Despite suggestions that Ross Barkley could be arriving from Everton, fans of Tottenham would be devastated to lose Eriksen to Barcelona.

Barkley suffered a hamstring tear recently, having told Ronald Koeman of his desire to leave Everton earlier this summer.

His injury, combined with his soon-to-expire contract, has resulted in his valuation dropping from £50m to approximately £25m.
