While the blockbuster trade that sent Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics and Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the 2018 Brooklyn Nets first-round pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers rightfully stole the spotlight on Tuesday evening, another major NBA story went under the radar.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Andrew Wiggins fired his agent Bill Duffy shortly after he negotiated a five-year, $148 million max contract extension for the Minnesota Timberwolves forward.

"We are disappointed that Andrew made this decision, especially after a three-year partnership where we worked closely with Andrew and his entire family," Duffy told ESPN. "Unfortunately, tampering is a common problem in our industry, and that's part of the reason why I've already been in contact with the NBPA to discuss my rights in this matter. Obviously, whenever Andrew signs the max extension that we negotiated with Minnesota, we will work with the NBPA to make sure that our interests are protected.”

Wojnarowski pointed out that while NBA players can choose to leave an agent at any time, the Player’s Association has guidelines that compensate previous agents for deals negotiated under their watch. Therefore, if Wiggins signs the max deal sometime soon, the entire situation can become very confusing when it comes to possible compensation for Duffy and the BDA Sports agency that he’s a part of.

Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor previously said that he’d be willing to offer Wiggins a max deal to stay in Minnesota if and only if the shooting guard sat down with him to discuss his future development.

"To me, by making this offer, I'm speculating that his contribution to the team will be more in the future," Taylor told The Associated Press. "We've got to be better. He can't be paid just for what he's doing today. He's got to be better.”

He continued, ”So when you're talking about negotiations on his part, I'm already extending to him that I'm willing to meet the max. But there are some things that I need out of him, and that is the commitment to be a better player than you are today."

"I just think it's important," Taylor said. "If a guy is a real star and he really cares about it, which I think he does, I think it's a commitment. I'm not sure that he wouldn't do it anyway. But I think that's part of the negotiations.”

Apparently the two sides met and the owner was satisfied with whatever Wiggins had to say.

It remains to be seen whether or not Wiggins signs the max deal. In the coming days, more information will likely come out detailing the reason (or reasons) why Wiggins cut ties with Duffy at such an important time.
