Shkodran Mustafi has only been at the Emirates Stadium 12 months but could already be heading out the exit.

The German World Cup winner was hailed as just the kind of defender Arsenal needed when he joined from Valencia last year.

Despite kicking off his career in north London in impressive form, the 25-year-old's performances have gradually declined since the start of 2017.

Nevertheless, it would still be surprising to see Arsene Wenger completely write off someone he signed in the latter stages of last summer's window for £35 million.

And yet, according to The Mirror, Inter Milan have lodged a surprising bid for Mustafi.

The Italians, now managed by Luciano Spalletti, are believed to have made an offer to loan the centre-back for a season with a view to a permanent deal worth over £20 million.

The report claims Juventus are also interested in acquiring his services, however, Inter are desperate to get a deal done before the transfer window closes next week.

They are confident an agreement can be reached because Wenger knows members of his squad will have to leave before any more new faces to be brought in.

The Gunners boss started his clear-out last week with the departure of Gabriel Paulista to Valencia, meanwhile, Lucas Perez is also expected to return to Spain with Deportivo La Coruna in the near future.

But with Calum Chambers set to stay at the club as a backup option, there is a belief another one of Arsenal's defenders could leave.

That could depend on their pursuit of Virgil van Dijk, though. If Wenger and co. can steal a march on the wantaway Southampton star, Inter's chances of signing Mustafi would dramatically improve.

Inter will also be encouraged there is a feeling amongst the players that their interest and offer is being seriously considered.

Mustafi made his first appearance of the season as the Gunners slipped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Stoke on Saturday.
