Nobody could have imagined at the start of the summer that Paulinho would be a Barcelona player before the transfer window closed. The Brazilian midfielder, who flopped at Tottenham, had performed well for Guangzhou Evergrande in China but didn’t appear to fit the profile of a typical Barça player.Paulinho turned 29 in July and displayed little during his two-year stint at Spurs to suggest he possessed the quality to play alongside Lionel Messi and co. at the Camp Nou.Barcelona fans were fuming when they discovered their club’s interest in Paulinho was more than just paper talk.To add insult to injury for the disgruntled supporters, Barça forked out a cool £36.5 million for the South American. However, in the current climate that probably represents reasonable value for money for a player of Paulinho’s calibre.

Barcelona fans react to Paulinho's debut

Saturday afternoon saw the moment that Barcelona fans had been dreading: Paulinho pulling on their club’s shirt and making his debut.

With just two minutes of normal time left to play against Alaves and Barça 2-0 up thanks to a Messi brace, Paulinho entered the fray in place of the legendary Andres Iniesta.

Barcelona fans on Twitter reacted with some very amusing tweets…

Nothing like giving your new signing a chance, eh lads.

Video of Paulinho's debut 'highlights' emerges

One fan even created an utterly pointless video showing Paulinho’s ‘highlights’ from the 2-0 away win.

You can watch it here (although you may need to click 'Watch on YouTube' in order to view it)...

Or watch it here...

If it was designed deliberately to make Paulinho look bad, then it worked…

Paulinho: I will change the opinion of the people

Let’s hope he ends up making his doubters eat their words.

"Everything I can do I can do it by playing, so I will change the opinion of the people," Paulinho told Sport, per Goal, last week. "The best way to respond is on the field, helping my team-mates, striving for victories.

"I am very mature and I do not think about [criticism], only about helping Barcelona win titles."
