The Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers agreed the biggest trade of the summer by swapping All-Star point guards Kyrie Irving and Isaiah Thomas.
Despite being Conference rivals, the Cavs were left with little option but to part with Irving after he requested a trade and got the best possible deal in return from the Celtics.
The Cavaliers also received Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the Brooklyn Nets' 2018 unprotected first round pick as part of the deal.
Both Thomas and Kyrie have not spoken publicly about the deal since it was concluded several days ago but we have learned how Isaiah felt about the news when he was first informed.
His namesake and Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas revealed that he spoke to the two-time All-Star and explained that reaction was one of real sadness.
In an interview with Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com, Thomas said: "I spoke to Isaiah yesterday. Emotionally, he's hurt. Emotionally, he's wounded. Now from a basketball standpoint, he and Kyrie Irving, this will be great for them; they both will do well.
"But you know, it really was like a punch in the gut because it came out of nowhere. Kyrie was expecting the trade, he was prepared for it. In talking to Isaiah the other night, now he's scrambling to find out where his kids are going to go to school, trying to find a place to live, and it was just so unexpected for him.
"And the thing that really kind of pulled at my heartstrings was that, you know, he said he gave his heart and soul to the Celtics; he gave them everything."
These are some strong words from the former Pistons great and to hear of Thomas' feelings in such a way is revealing.
The 28-year-old's sister tragically died while Boston was in the opening round of the playoffs and he decided to play despite the heartbreak he had suffered and even memorably dropped 52 points on the Washington Wizards on the birthday of his late sister.
To make matters worse for Thomas, there are reports that the trade could potentially be voided as he is suffering from a hip injury that Cleveland has serious worries about after undergoing a medical examination with the player on Friday.
Returning to play for the Celtics will be extremely difficult for the dynamic guard as they have inflicted some serious emotional damage on him.
Whichever team he suits up for next season will have some work to do to build the player back up again.News Now - Sport News
