The Los Angeles Lakers have a long list of all-time greats that once played for the franchise, and Lamar Odom is undoubtedly one of them.

The 6'10 forward spent seven seasons with the Lakers, capturing two championships, a Sixth Man of the Year award and the hearts of fans in Los Angeles. Odom is one of the most beloved players over the last two decades for the purple, and rightfully so.

Odom was ahead of the curve, one of the first versatile point forwards in the modern NBA to be more than a big man with a little bit of floor spacing. He could pass and run the floor like a point guard, stretch it out to the perimeter and three-point line or get to the rim with his long strides and incredible wingspan.

That's why it comes as no surprise that the Lakers and Odom have been discussing a plan to have the two-time NBA champion officially retire as a member of the franchise, reports Shams Charania of The Vertical.

Los Angeles is considering signing Odom to a contract during training camp, allowing him to retire with the team he enjoyed a meteoric rise to the top of the NBA with. If it does happen, though, Odom isn't doing it for himself.

“My family looks forward to me retiring as a Laker more than me. I’m not really emotional about being praised, about signing for a day. I’m shy at the end of the day. For my son, for my family, for my fans, they may enjoy that day. It’s for them," Odom told Charania.

If it's for the fans they'll happily accept that gesture from Odom and the Lakers, and celebrate a player that was downright dominant at his peak. Considering he only narrowly escaped death back in 2015, giving fans a chance to thank Lamar for helping bring championships back to Los Angeles seems more than fitting.

Odom was spotted at the Lakers' training facility during pre-draft workouts this summer, and it's sounding like there's a pretty good chance he'll be around a bit more pretty soon. Even if he never plays a minute of actual basketball, fans will be happy just to have a collective moment to cheer for Odom at least one more time.

It'd be a fantastic gesture from the Lakers' front office, and Odom deserves every bit of consideration he's getting from the franchise. Lamar helped lay the groundwork not only for Lakers championships, but versatile big men across the league today.
