Due to concerns about Isaiah Thomas's hip injury, the blockbuster trade between the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers for star point guard Kyrie Irving has hit a stalemate.

The Cavaliers now want more assets from Boston in order to complete the deal, but it remains to be seen whether the Celtics will give in.

In addition to Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the Brooklyn Nets' unprotected 2018 first-round NBA Draft pick, the Cavaliers are now inquiring about a pair of young stars on the Celtics' roster.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Cavaliers are interested in 2017 No. 3 overall pick Jayson Tatum and last year's No. 3 pick Jaylen Brown. He said on SportsCenter that Cleveland is also interested in more draft picks (via NESN.com):

“Now, Cleveland is going to try to inquire about a couple of the Celtics’ young players, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, who they tried to get in the original trade, that is very unlikely,” Wojnarowski said. “But Boston still has a war chest of future first-round picks of their own, and some picks they control from other teams, and Cleveland is going to try to get one more of those to finalize this deal.”

Obviously, that would be a steep price for Boston to pay after already having given up so much for Irving, but that's seemingly what it will take to finalize the deal.

Wojnarowski said the Celtics are resisting the Cavs' demands as of now, as they believe they were up front about Thomas's hip injury and don't think they should be punished for Cleveland's cold feet:

“Boston is resisting, and are going to initially at least, resist this idea,” Wojnarowski said. “Boston believes that it was completely transparent with Cleveland about where Thomas was physically, his rehab. Cleveland’s version of this is that they didn’t realize how long Thomas could potentially be out this season. He’s in the final year of his contract, and obviously, that matches up with what will likely be the final year of LeBron’s current deal, and so there’s going to be a showdown here between these two teams that may last a couple more days.”

Whether or not one team gives in to complete this deal remains to be seen, but right now, the two squads are stuck in kind of an awkward stalemate. If neither team backs off their demands, it'll only add more fuel to the fire in the rivalry between two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.
