Following days of uncertainty regarding the blockbuster trade involving Kyrie Irving and Isaiah Thomas, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics have now officially completed the deal.

The two teams first confirmed the trade last week but there were reports that the Cavs were considering cancelling it after they discovered the severity of Thomas' current hip injury.

The Cavaliers were keen to secure more assets in order to rubber stamp the deal and were rumoured to have asked for either Jaylen Brown or rookie Jayson Tatum to be included.

Boston was unwilling to part with one of their talented young players but have instead agreed to send a 2020 second round pick to Cleveland - via the Miami Heat - to acquire Irving.

This was made official by the two parties last night as they had a deadline of this morning to make a decision and inform the league.

In a joint announcement, the Cavs and Celtics said: "In conjunction with finalising the trade involving Kyrie Irving, Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and a 2018 first round pick the Celtics acquired via Brooklyn, the Celtics and Cavaliers have agreed to modify the terms of the trade such that Boston will also send Miami’s 2020 second round pick to Cleveland. The trade is now complete."

Kyrie will reportedly be introduced as a Celtics player in a news conference on Friday where he is sure to face some serious questions.

It will be the first time the four-time All-Star speaks to the media since requesting a trade from the Cavs and there will certainly be a desire for reporters to dig deeper into the reasons for his decision to leave the Eastern Conference champions.

Now that the trade is complete, the main focus for Cleveland will be to get Isaiah back to full fitness and out on the court as soon as possible.

With LeBron James entering free agency in 2018, the franchise is keen to surround him with as much talent as possible to give themselves the best opportunity to win another championship and hopefully convince him to remain in Ohio.

In his first interview since being offloaded to the Wine and Gold, Thomas said he fully expects to be back healthy and dismissed suggestions that his injury could be career threatening.

"There's never been an indication that I wouldn't be back, and there's never been an indication that this is something messing up my career," Thomas told ESPN on Tuesday. "Maybe I am not going to be back as soon this season as everyone wants me to be, but I'm going to be back, and I'm going to be the same player again. No doctor has told me anything different than that."

With the trade now coming to an end, we can look forward to the opening night encounter between the two teams with real anticipation.
