It was expected to be a relatively quiet deadline day up at Old Trafford this year.

Having already signed up Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic before the season started, it looked like Jose Mourinho would miss out on that fourth and final signing he spoke so frequently about.

And given how strongly Man United have kicked off the new campaign the manager appeared to be fairly satisfied with the squad at his disposal.

Most of the speculation at Man United heading into the final day of the summer window regarded those who could potentially leave the club, with a couple of youngsters thought to be available for loan.

So far, only Matty Willock has departed. The midfielder has joined Dutch side FC Utrecht for the remainder of the season.

But United might not have completely given up on bringing another fresh face to the club.

According to The Sun, Mourinho has made an audacious late bid for Chelsea star Willian.

The Red Devils were able to raid Mourinho's former club for Matic earlier this summer and their Portuguese manager is hoping he can pull off another big coup by getting another one of his favourites to make the move north.

The report claims Willian may only cost in the region £35 million too - a bargain compared to some of the other deals taking place today.

It would still be surprising to see the 29-year-old leave Stamford Bridge, though, having made 185 appearances for the club since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013.

United's hopes of signing the Brazilian could depend on how successful Antonio Conte is at improving his own squad.

The Blues have been linked with a host of potential targets including Riyad Mahrez and Danny Drinkwater but are yet to make any significant headway.
