Like many other current and former boxers, Ricky Hatton wasn’t particularly enthused by the prospect of watching Floyd Mayweather go head-to-head against UFC’s Conor McGregor.

While the event may have captured the world’s imagination, some boxing purists couldn’t get past the ‘freak show’ element.

“I cant say I’m a fan of it. I’m a fan of UFC, a fan of McGregor – he’s got character, he’s exciting, entertaining, value for money,” Hatton told reporters before the fight. "I hope I don’t upset any Irish fans or Conor, but I can’t get excited about this fight one bit."

However, like the rest of us, Hatton tuned into the fight last weekend.

Mayweather prevailed, although the 40-year-old American was far from convincing. He secured the 50th and final victory of his illustrious career as well as a huge pay cheque by a 10th round TKO.

McGregor also made a fortune from the bout, thought to be the most lucrative in history, but the charismatic Irishman isn’t expected to box competitively again.

Hatton: I was disappointed by the fight

After watching the action unfold, Hatton has now revealed that he was left underwhelmed by the fight.

"I was disappointed as far as the fight goes,” the 38-year-old told the Daily Star Online, per Boxing Scene.

"I didn't think it was a great fight. I thought Conor did very well early on, I don't know (if) that was down to Floyd taking it slow. I don't want to take anything away from Conor.

"I think the build up was bigger than the actual fight itself. He will go back to being the superstar that he is."

Hatton: I respect Conor - but Floyd won easily

On McGregor, Hatton continued: "I give Conor respect. I think it was clear to see that it was this sport (boxing) and it is totally different.

"You need years and years of experience behind you, he just went straight in.

"I don't think he (Mayweather) was out of second gear. I think that was down more to Floyd than Conor."

Hatton: It's time for McGregor to go back to UFC

Hatton also said that McGregor would have been better off sticking to UFC, rather than trying his hand at boxing.

"I think it is clear to see,” the Mancunian added. “I think he did well from one sport to another but it was clear he would have been better off staying in his own sport.

"Son you can hold your head up high.

"Well done you did well, you came out of your own sport straight into another but maybe it is time to go back to the sport you're best at – UFC."

Hatton: Mayweather is one of the best ever

But what does Hatton think about Mayweather?

It’s no secret that the 38-year-old doesn’t have a particularly high opinion of the American as a person after their 2007 fight, but he respects the undefeated boxing legend for his sporting talent.

"He's not on my Christmas card list (but) I think he deserves it,” Hatton said when asked if Mayweather’s 50-0 record should be respected in the history books.

"If he just had one more against a decent opponent I think then none of the doubters can have anything to say about him.

"I would not like to see him fight again but for his own legacy he might have to if he wants people to accept he's beaten Marciano's record.

"100% (one of the best ever). I think he's got to be there, at least two or three.

"People will have their own order of top five. That is the thing about boxing – it is all about your opinion."
