Kevin Owens has been on top of the world ever since he decided to join WWE.

Owens recently did an interview with Argus Leader to promote some upcoming WWE live events. During the interview, he spoke on a wide variety of topics about his WWE career so far. One of the questions that were asked was why he dropped ‘the face of America’ gimmick that he had been using on Smackdown Live for the past little while.

Owens, who has had some big feuds thus far this year including with AJ Styles, has been a top player in the WWE since signing with the sports entertainment company.

By looking back on his career, he made his name known while working for Ring of Honor, which he was under their banner from 2007 - 2014 where he wrestled under his real name, Kevin Steen, where he held the ROH World Championship and ROH World Tag Team Championship. He also wrestled on the independent circuit for 14 years, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG), where he held the PWG World Championship a record three times, as well as the PWG World Tag Team Championship on three occasions.

He also worked International Wrestling Syndicate (IWS), where he held three times the IWS World Heavyweight Championship, All American Wrestling (AAW), where he held the AAW Heavyweight Championship, and Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW), where he held the CZW Iron Man Championship.

Owens signed with WWE in 2014 and was placed WWE's developmental branch NXT, where he was a one-time NXT Champion. He was called up to the main roster in May 2015. During his time thus far under the WWE banner, he has held the Universal Championship once (being the longest-reigning titleholder at 188 days), the Intercontinental Championship twice, and the United States Championship three times.

Owens gave a pretty good explanation as to why he dropped the gimmick. The reason is because many other WWE Superstars on the Smackdown Live roster are currently talking about America and he doesn’t want to be like anybody else. Here is what he said:

“I’m moving away from that now by choice because there’s so many people on Smackdown right now talking about America. Whether it’s Jinder Mahal or Rusev, I don’t like being like other people. When I started the Face of America, there was nobody on Smackdown doing that kind of stuff, and now there’s too many of us. I’m going to go back to being Kevin Owens, and that’s always worked out pretty good for me.”
