Italian professional tennis star Fabio Fognini has been shown the door at the US Open after being found guilty of verbally abusing a female umpire during his first round clash against Stefano Travaglia.

Shouting an obscene remark at the official, Fognini totally lost control of his emotions as he succumbed to defeat at the hands of his compatriot.

Although he exited the tournament in the men’s singles division, the volatile Italian was scheduled to play his doubles match alongside partner Simone Bolelli against Australian and American pair John-Patrick Smith and Nicolas Monroe on Sunday.

The tie, therefore, would not be taking place, while Smith and Monroe will be named the winners of the match via forfeit, as the Italian duo conclude their participation.

As per Metro, the US Open authorities released a statement in regard to the verdict, saying: “Pursuant to the Grand Slam Code of Conduct, Article III Q and Article IV A and B, Fabio Fognini is hereby provisionally suspended from further participation in the US Open pending a Final Determination whether a Major Offense has been committed during his first round singles match.

“The provisional suspension is with immediate effect and, therefore, Mr Fognini has been withdrawn from his upcoming doubles match.

“There will be no further public comment concerning this matter until the Major Offense process is complete.”

The 30-year-old was heard using insulting language toward Swedish umpire Louise Engzell, and as a result, has been imposed with three separate fines – the largest sanction being an astounding £11,581, which Fognini is bound to pay in the coming days.

The total valuation of the fines sum up to £18,500.

According to the Daily Mail, Fognini called the Swedish umpire 'a whore', amongst other things.

The fines will be deducted from the prize money he will collect after his first round loss at Flushing Meadows.

The tennis governing body has decided the world number 26 will remain provisionally suspended from competing in tournaments.

However, Fognini later apologised for his outburst on the court and admitted to be being frustrated during the turn of events that led to such drastic actions.

Only time will tell if Fognini learns for his mistake and refrains from any more unsportsmanlike conduct in future.
