It's been a summer of change in the Premier League, particularly for Manchester United.

With his side finishing sixth last season - although they still qualified for the Champions League after winning the Europa League - boss Jose Mourinho knew he had to make some big signings.

He did just that with Everton goal machine Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic heading to Old Trafford for around a combined £155 million.

However, as some stars arrived, others knew their time at the club was coming to a close. Wayne Rooney was one of those men.

The legendary striker - 32 next month - opted to rejoin boyhood club Everton and in an almost direct swap for Lukaku.

He left Old Trafford as United's all-time record goalscorer with 253 goals and he is also England's all-time record goalscorer, too.

Not to mention, he won every possible trophy during his time with the Red Devils. He's had a fantastic career, that much is undeniable.

So how does he feel about Lukaku, just 24, taking his spot?

In an exclusive interview with TalkSport, Rooney said: "For that United side, he is the perfect player.

"He is powerful, quick and strong and he scores goals, so certainly will improve that team."

Rooney has made a strong start following his return his return to Goodison Park with two goals in three Premier League games, but Lukaku has really come out of the blocks on fire.

The big Belgian international has four goals from four games in all competitions thus far and has looked seriously impressive alongside his dynamic peers like Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Mourinho seems to have found a winning formula for United with Matic now marshalling the midfield so Paul Pogba can have more influence on attacks while the team's flair players have been given more license than ever to create.

The writing was on the wall for Rooney last season with his limited starts and Zlatan Ibrahimovic's 28 goals and the idea of him competing with Lukaku in the twilight of his career was never on the cards.

Still, very gracious comments from the former England international regardless.
