England legend Peter Shilton has upset a lot of Manchester United supporters today by revealing his top eight Premier League goalkeepers of all-time.
Shilton, who represented his country a record 125 times between 1970-90, wrote a piece for the Daily Mail where he ran the rule over the current state of goalkeeping in this country.
And in the middle of a rather critical piece which highlighted that the 'real art of goalkeeping' is being lost in the modern day, the 67-year-old also picked out some of his favourite players from yesteryear and today.
Despite naming two ex-United shot-stoppers, Shilton has still come in for criticism from Red Devils by not finding room to include the current No.1, David de Gea.
The Spaniard, who has been at Old Trafford since 2011, is widely regarded as one of the best keepers in the world. However, that seemingly isn't enough to make it into Shilton's top eight.
Man United supporters probably wouldn't be quite so critical had Shilton's list been full of legends but it really isn't.
Shilton's top eight Premier League keepers of all-time
1) David Seaman
2) Peter Schmeichel
3) Petr Cech
4) Thibaut Courtois
5) Edwin van der Sar
6) Kasper Schmeichel
7) David James
8) Mark Schwarzer
Admittedly, that top five is pretty special but the last three - while all pretty handy during their prime - would probably struggle to get picked over De Gea if they ever had to compete for the same jersey.
So it's understandable why many loyal fans of De Gea weren't too impressed. Here are the best tweets:
In the early part of De Gea's career at United, Shilton was among those to criticise the now 26-year-old for his technique.
"I have to say from a technique point of view I wasn’t totally convinced with some of the things he was doing in the early part of the season. He looked very raw and he didn’t look a dominant goalkeeper," Shilton said in 2012.
So perhaps the ex-England international is still not overly convinced by De Gea's ability. Nevertheless, the three-time Man Utd Player of the Season winner has been able to convince most of his other critics since then.
