Bury skipper Stephen Dawson has rejected a new contract offer at Gigg Lane, the club has confirmed.

Dawson, the Shakers' current player of the year, began talks over a new deal last week when he revealed he hoped to commit his future to the club. His current deal expires next summer.

A club statement said: "Stephen Dawson has officially rejected further new terms offered to him. The club's directors would like to state that the club have offered Stephen what they consider to be a fantastic deal, but that Stephen believes he can play at a higher level."

The statement continued: "As is correct, the club will not be making any further statements regarding this matter and would like to thank all parties for the professionalism shown during protracted negotiations."
