This is going to be a cracker of a fight!
The two stars of the middleweight division Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin taking each other on at the Las Vegas’s T-Mobile Arena, on Mexican Independence day, for the WBC, IBF, WBO, and WBA belts.
With the world’s attention solely focused on the Floyd Mayweather–Conor McGregor billion dollar fight last month, it’s safe to say that Canelo vs Triple G has gone somewhat under the collective sporting radar.
Which seems to be a shame; especially as WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has gone to the trouble of commissioning a special belt for the winner of the bout on September 16.
“The belt is 100 percent Mexican and it is to honour the two dates that are celebrated annually in Mexican boxing on May 5 and September 16," Sulaiman has said.
Mexican Artist Luis de la Cruz designed the belt, and along with his brother Sergio, spent over 300 hours building it.
“The Huichol Belt is a beautiful piece, it has the Mexican flag and the flag of Kazakhstan, both fighters are at their best and is the one that fans have been waiting for, whoever wins will be ratified as the best in the world.”
Kazakh boxer Golovkin goes into the fight as the bookies favourite, and he looks to be in top shape with a little over a week away from fight night.
He’ll need to be top condition, however, as Mexican fighter Canelo has only ever lost one fight in a 51 bout career – against Mayweather in 2013.
If Canelo does get past Triple G, it will be the undefeated 35-year-old’s first defeat in 37 professional bouts.
You can see the special belt they will be fighting for below.
Golovkin has said that this could be his last ever appearance in a boxing ring; the Kazakh sporting icon has said that he wishes to retire to spend more time with his wife.News Now - Sport News
