British number one Andy Murray has announced via Facebook that he is out for the rest of the tennis season.

The 30-year-old has been suffering with hip problems since the French Open at Roland Garros, an injury that was exasperated by the player’s decision to play at Wimbledon in June.

Murray wrote that injury will now keep him out of the Shanghai, Beijing, Vienna, and most likely Paris ATP events.

On his official Facebook page, Murray wrote the following:

“Hi everyone...

“Just wanted to update you all on my injury and the rest of my season.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete in the upcoming events in Beijing and Shanghai, and most likely, the final two events to finish the season in Vienna and Paris due to my hip injury which has been bothering me the last few months.

“Having consulted with a number of leading hip specialists over the last week, along with my own team, we have decided that this is the best decision for my long-term future.”

The former world number one had been struggling with an elbow injury at the beginning of the season, which saw the normally highly aggressive playing style of the Scot become sort of passive; especially in Brisbane for the Australian Open and at the tournament at Indian Wells.

Murray’s form seemed to improve during the spring events, however, the Scot was still frustratingly short of his best and looked like a shadow of his former self.

It’s something the double Olympic champion (London and Rio) addressed in the Facebook post, though, he also promised fans that he would be back competing for Grand Slams next season.

“Although this has been a frustrating year on court for many reasons,

“I’m confident after this extended period of rest and rehabilitation that I will be able to reach my best level again and be competing for Grand Slam titles next season.

“I will be beginning my 2018 season in Brisbane in preparation for the Australian Open and I’m look forward playing in Glasgow later this year against Roger for UNICEF UK and Sunny-sid3up.

“I have a fantastic team working alongside me to help me through this process and appreciate the support from them and all of my fans over this difficult period.
“🚴🏃🏋️💪🎾😊👍”

Hopefully Murray gets back to his old self soon, it would be a crying shame if the Scot’s career ends on the sad sight of him limping out of Wimbledon’s car park.
