In May 2016, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez of Mexico squared up to Britain's Amir Khan, who had jumped two weight divisions to challenge Alvarez in the hope of becoming only the third former light-welterweight world champion to win a middleweight world title.

The fight was progressing well for Khan, with the Brit seemingly ahead on points going into the sixth round, despite a vociferously pro-Alvarez crowd at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas due to the fight coinciding with the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo.

Khan had used his speed and movement to frustrate the favourite Alvarez, but, Khan dropped his guard momentarily early in the sixth, letting Alvarez land a brutal right hand.

Paulie Malignaggi commented on the fight for the BBC, and at the time, he said:"Amir was boxing beautiful; it was a very cerebral fight from him.

"Canelo knew he was getting scored on and it was a beautiful performance up until that point. It was a shame that punch came. It was one of the knockouts of the year. A sensational one-punch knockout."

Khan stayed down and Alvarez was victorious.

Immediately after the fight, Alvarez's promoter Oscar de la Hoya called for a unification bout with Gennady Golovkin.

"Golovkin, make sure you answer your phone in the morning because we'll be calling.

"That's the fight the fans want and the fight Canelo wants. And those fans who were turned off by Mayweather-Pacquiao will fall in love with boxing again."

This fight between the two is now just over a week away. They will face off at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 16.

The legendary Kazakh Golovkin will put his 37-fight unbeaten record, as well as his WBC, WBA, IBF, and IBO belts on the line against Alvarez.

Golovkin's legacy is on the line against Alvarez, and he will hope he finishes his fight with the Mexican in a better state than Amir Khan did his.
