Chris Jericho has opened up on this famous segment.

Thanks to Jericho, this segment was saved and turned out to be great. However, it could’ve been very different. The former WWE Champion has been under contract with the sports entertainment company off and on since 1999. Jericho is a six-time world champion, having won the WWF Championship once, the WCW/World Championship twice, and WWE's World Heavyweight Championship three times.

During a recent appearance on Live Audio Wrestling, Jericho talked about how he had to fight with the creative team to get his vision of the Festival of Friendship segment with former Universal Champion Kevin Owens on television earlier this year. For a bit of a backstory on this angle, we are here to help.

The friendship between Jericho and Owens came to an end after Jericho accepted Goldberg's challenge for Owens's Universal Championship at the Fastlane PPV (pay-per-view event). This didn’t sit well with Owens.

On the February 13 episode of Raw, Jericho held a Festival of Friendship for Owens, who was not impressed and viciously attacked Jericho. This led to Jericho returning at Fastlane on March 5th to distract Owens during his match with Goldberg and causing Owens to lose the Universal Championship. Thanks to reddit.com/user/leglessman for the quotes:

“The day that we had the show, Vince wasn’t there, and they tried to change it to where Kevin would just attack me. And my thing was the whole drama of revealing the list of KO and “hey how come my name’s on this” and the looking up, and the feeling of oh (expletive) don’t do it, don’t do it and then he attacks me.

I had to fight for that all day long, and there was some real heated debates going on between me and Triple H and a couple of other people. I said this is the way we’re doing it. It’s the way I explained it to Vince and Paul was like “I’ll call Vince right now, he’s in a plane, I don’t care I’ll find him. I’ll send a carrier pigeon to get him”. And finally I think it was just exasperation, just do whatever you want.”
