When Daniel Sturridge was introduced with 20 minutes remaining of their Champions League clash against Spartak Moscow, Jurgen Klopp would have been hoping the striker had a positive effect on Liverpool’s misfiring attackers.

The Merseysiders had battered their opponents throughout the match but were being held 1-1.

Would Sturridge be the man to convert one of the hatful of chances they created?

Well, no.

The striker came on for Sadio Mane in the 70th minute and couldn’t grab the winner as Liverpool left Russia very frustrated.

While it can be difficult coming into a match with just 20 minutes left, Sturridge’s performance explained why Roberto Firmino has been favoured to him this season.

And a ‘highlights’ video of Sturridge’s cameo display has emerged on YouTube - and it doesn’t make for very good viewing.

In the clip, Sturridge lost possession five times and missed three glorious chances. Not really the substitute appearance Klopp was hoping for…

Watch: Sturridge's 'highlights'

Take a look:

While Sturridge had a bit of nightmare in Russia, there’s every possibility he will be promoted to Liverpool’s starting line-up for the trip to Newcastle on Sunday.

Despite having the firepower of Mane, Firmino Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho, the side have only been able to score six goals from the 121 shots in their last six matches - winning just one of those in the process.

While creating chances certainly isn’t a problem, sticking the ball in the back of the net is.

Maybe Sturridge’s ruthlessness is exactly what’s needed.

He will need to improve dramatically from what we saw on Tuesday, though.
