Romain Grosjean's conversation with team after Malaysia GP crash

Romain Grosjean was involved in a nasty accident during the second practice session ahead of this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix that forced officials to bring the session to a premature end.

Grosjean was sent skidding dangerously off the track after his tyre suddenly burst, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and slam into the hoardings that run alongside the track.

It was bizarre that Grosjean's tyre should suddenly give way in such spectacular fashion, but upon further review of video footage, it became clear that the tyre was not at fault for malfunctioning.

Grosjean struck a drainage hole cover that had been shaken loose by Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen, who had raced through corner number 12 only seconds ahead of the Swiss-born driver.

It seemed as though the cover had been taking a battering all day, and was flipped upside down by Raikkonen as Grosjean approached a little further back.

The wheel was understandably torn to bits by the cover and Grosjean was lucky to walk away from the incident unscathed.

His team were quickly on the radio trying to establish whether or not Grosjean was ok or conscience, and would have been thoroughly relieved when they received a swift response from the 31-year-old.

A groggy Grosjean replied: "What happened?

"I lost a tyre or a wheel on the curve or something. I lost a wheel!"

Grosjean, who lies in 13th place on the drivers' standing, was justifiably bewildered by what had just happened, but won't be pleased when he sees what the cause was.

The Haas team were also uncertain as to what had caused the tyre to fail so spectacularly, and simply replied: "Yeah, something bad, something bad."

Malaysian officials were quickly out on track to rectify the problem, but will have a lot of assurances to make ahead of the first qualifying session tomorrow that the track is safe.
