Dejan Lovren reveals a very worrying reason behind his dreadful form for Liverpool this season

Leicester City v Liverpool - Premier League

Since the start of the 2017/18 season, Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has come under the cosh for some very sub-standard performances.

The Croatain defender enjoyed a pretty decent campaign in 2015/16, showing signs that he had a clear future at the heart of the defence next to Joel Matip.

However, this time around, he has reverted to his old error-ridden ways and now, he is being ridiculed once again.

In truth, the only competent display he has turned in all season was at home to Arsenal when Jurgen Klopp's side cruised to a 4-0 victory and Lovren barely had to break stride that day.

Virtually every other time he has stepped out on the pitch, he has looked a liability and it is obvious why the manager was so keen to replace him with Virgil van Dijk this summer.

But, there could be a big reason behind his noticeable dip on the pitch this season and after hearing it, you kind of feel a bit sorry for Lovren.

Injuries have hampered him this year and the extent he is going to to feature for the Reds is pretty admirable.

"I have problems for the last two weeks with my whole body, it hurts," the 28-year-old told Sportske Novosti, per Goal.

"I have problems with my back...and now I have hurt my Achilles tendon.

"I play, but I'm not training at all. I can't train. The biggest problem is my back. That's why I skipped the matches against Manchester City and Burnley in the Premier League.

"I have big problems with the left side of my body. I'm taking pills so I can play. I take five pills before every game."

Watford v Liverpool - Premier League

Ouch, maybe he needs to rest rather than put his body and footballing reputation on the line.

Klopp does have a replacement available in Ragnar Klavan, while English youngster Joe Gomez can also deputise in the centre.

The whole fiasco yet again highlights the stupidity behind the manager's decision not to sign a centre-back.

Klopp was adamant there was no better alternative to Van Dijk but at this moment in time, that theory looks rather foolish.
