When he announced his retirement from England duty this year, the footballing world saw fit to remember Wayne Rooney's impressive career with the Three Lions.

The former Manchester United legend departed as the country's leading goal scorer, eclipsing the long-standing record held by Sir Bobby Charlton.

"Every time I was selected was a real privilege but I believe now is the time to bow out," the 31-year-old said.

Nevertheless, there were still some who pointed out that Rooney's performances in major international tournaments were often below-par.

Aside from a devastating Euro 2004 campaign in which he scored a sensational hat trick against Croatia, he never really turned it on when it mattered.

He only ever scored once at a World Cup, which came against Uruguay in 2014 after he had provided a sumptuous assist for Daniel Sturridge in the game before versus Italy.

However, in that match against the Azzurri - which England went on to lose 2-1 - Rooney produced one of his most embarrassing moments in an England shirt.

When asked to take a simple corner in the Brazilian heat, the Englishman did something that is difficult to even comprehend.

ROONEY'S DREADFUL CORNER

Wow, I mean, what kind of technique is he even going for there?

Many get frustrated when a player slams his kick into the head of the first man but honestly, after watching that, failing to clear the first hurdle would be deemed a success.

There were initial thoughts that Rooney may consider a return to the England setup after some impressive form for Everton.

However, he was quick to move to say that his decision is final and that he will not be part of Garet Southgate's plans for the 2018 World Cup.

“My mind’s made up,” Rooney told talkSPORT, per Guardian. “I’ve seen it a few times when players come out of retirement and gone to tournaments and it’s not right.

“I think the lads now who are trying to qualify for Russia, if they get there then they’re the players who will deserve to play in the tournament, so my decision is made.”
