World number 29 Phil Mickelson may not have been in the best form over the last few years but that has not deterred him from seeing the funny side of his wayward hitting.Driving the ball accurately has been an issue for the American ace but despite the hindrance, Mickelson still put in a competitive performance at the Safeway Open in California. The 2017-18 PGA Tour season-opening event proved be quite fruitful for the 47-year-old as he finally delivered on the course when it mattered.Mickelson was in contention for victory but his poor driving let him down once again - resulting in compatriot Brendan Steele registering back-to-back titles at the Silverado Country Club.He ended joint-third with Chesson Hadley at 12 under - the 47-year-old's highest finish in a Tour event since being the runner-up at the 2016 Open Championship. The American ace hit a shockingly low 15 out of 56 fairways this week - with only 27 percent reaching the short grass.Eight fairways on Saturday and a combined seven in the other three rounds put an abrupt end to what was beginning to look like a comeback of sorts. He missed the short grass at the final two holes as well. However, his surprising display at the par-5 16th at the Silverado Resort and Spa’s North Course, provided a hilarious moment for those watching.Mickelson delivered an entertaining bit of commentary for his own shot - one of the few to actually hit the fairway. He said: “Let’s take a moment to admire the fact that I just hit a fairway.”You can watch the video below:

It remains to be seen if the talented left-hander can use this display as a stepping stone back towards his best form in 2018.

The last PGA Tour title won by Mickelson was back in 2013, the same year he won both the US Open and The Open Championship.
