Sky Sports made a very awkward mistake when Ben Woodburn came on for Wales

The 59 year wait for Wales' return to the World Cup will continue after a gut wrenching defeat to the Republic of Ireland on Monday night.

An incredibly tense showdown at the Cardiff City Stadium eventually saw the visitors prevail 1-0 thanks to a brilliant finish by James McClean following Jeff Hendrick's stunning run.

Without Gareth Bale adorning their attack, Wales never got out of second gear and even Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey wasn't able to produce the goods with a stale performance on his 50th cap.

As a result, freshly 1-0 down, Chris Coleman's final role of the dice came in the 65th minute with the introduction of Liverpool starlet Ben Woodburn.

The 17-year-old continues to work his way up the ranks at Anfield, scoring his first goal for the senior team in an EFL Cup quarter-final clash with Leeds United last season.

His success has arguably been even greater on the international scene. Woodburn already has three caps to his name and scored a sensational winner against Austria back in September.

However, in the end, his introduction proved futile as Ireland eased out the game and secured themselves a World Cup play-off place.

It saw Woodburn miss out on the opportunity to likely play in Russia next year, a prospect that looked greatly possible after the semi-final run at EURO 2016.

Unfortunately, though, the biggest story that emerged from Woodburn's performance surrounded a bizarre error from Sky Sports and their graphics for the World Cup qualifiers.

When the Liverpool forward replaced Andy King, the on-screen display labelled the incoming youngster as 'no initial surname.' Take a look at the very awkward moment below:

Somebody at the Sky Sports offices will be feeling rather sheepish, that's for sure.

Perhaps Woodburn is a victim of just how new to the scene he is here.

Nevertheless, you would think his performance against Austria and general upsurge would warrant his surname taking pride of place on a players' database.

The error emerges in a month that also saw Newcastle United branded as 'black and white scum' during the subtitles of their Match of the Day 2 highlights against Liverpool.

Well, at least the Toon Army were given a name, of sorts...
