Derby hope they will be able to extend DJ Campbell's loan spell from Leicester until the end of the season.
His loan expires at the end of the month and Derby boss Nigel Clough plans talks with City counterpart Nigel Pearson about extending the 28-year-old's stay.
"We've got a couple of weeks until he's up. We'd like to keep him certainly until the end of the season, which is as far as we're thinking at the moment," said Clough.
He added: "We'll be talking about that and it will depend on incomings and outgoings as well and if he wants to stay.
"We've got a few strikers available and had Rob Hulse sitting on the bench on Saturday, so it will probably depends on what happens with a couple of others."
Campbell scored twice in the Rams' 3-0 win at Peterborough on Saturday to take his tally to three goals in seven Championship appearances since arriving at Pride Park in late November.
