Let's be honest here, sometimes you just have to wonder why Paul Merson is even a pundit.

A revered attacking midfielder in his day, accumulating 99 goals for Arsenal and 21 caps for England, the 49-year-old produces some rather questionable comments and analysis in the media with Sky Sports.

From choosing a Manchester City and Chelsea combined XI without Kevin de Bruyne, producing horrific score predictions on the regular and admitting to knowing nothing about Scottish football, Merson has done it all.

The practically comedic ex-England man might just have outdone himself this week, though, with an utterly bewildering comment on Arsene Wenger during an episode of A League Of Their Own.

Brace yourselves for this one.

Mersin theorised: "People say he's [Redknapp] a wheeler-dealer and it's so disrespectful.

"Tactically, he's one of the best I've worked with. If Arsene Wenger had Harry Redknapp's tactical nous, Arsenal would win the league."

Ok, so Harry Redknapp is criminally underrated as a manger but it's hard to see the freshly sacked Birmingham City coach being the one thing missing from Arsenal's title ambitions.

And the man himself - Wenger - certainly wasn't impressed with his ex-player's latest bout of ramblings, responding in this week's round of Premier League press conferences.

Likely augmented by their previous coming together in 2014, it's fair to say the Frenchman didn't go easy on Merson.
"These debates that I hear are a joke, a farce," he hit back, per the Mirror.

"People who have managed altogether zero games, they teach everybody how you should behave. It's a farce.

"If I really cared, do you think I would have survived for 18 years? I managed Paul Merson ... I tried. I'm not interested in him."

We're not sure whether the handful of games Merson managed at Walsall really refute Wenger's comments to be honest.

Wenger is no stranger to some left field statements of his own and although he took this response down a rather personal route, you can't blame him for throwing water on Merson's bizarre comments.

Furthermore, when a journalist brought up the fact Merson was making a 'return' to the game with Welsh fourth-tier side Caerau Maesteg, he dismissed the comment and cited the fact he only spoke about 'professional football.'

Caerau Maesteg v Arsenal to settle it, lads?
