When it comes to rivalries in British football, they don’t come much bigger than Liverpool v Manchester United.

The two most successful football clubs in England go head-to-head for the 227th time on Saturday lunchtime - and it promises to be an absolute belter.

In the build-up to this weekend’s fixture, you may have seen a few combined XIs comprised of the current players plying their trade for the two north-west rivals. But what would a Liverpool v Man Utd combined XI from the Premier League era look like?

Now, we know we won’t please everyone with the following XI but it’s just our opinion.

If you disagree - or agree - feel free to leave a comment in the box below with your own XIs.

Goalkeeper: Peter Schmeichel

The first name on this teamsheet and it’s an easy choice, Peter Schmeichel won five Premier League winners’ medals during his hugely successful spell with the Red Devils in the mid-to-late 1990s.

Right-back: Gary Neville

Liverpool fans have learned to respect Gary Neville since his retirement in 2011 thanks to his excellent work as a pundit on Sky Sports. Perhaps they’re now ready to admit that he has been the standout right-back in this fixture since 1992 - despite accusations that "he hates Scousers".

Centre-back: Rio Ferdinand

One of the greatest defenders of the Premier League era who made a big impact in this fixture, even scoring a couple of big goals.

Centre-back: Nemanja Vidic

He never particularly relished playing against Fernando Torres but, despite that, Nemanja Vidic was an absolute colossus for the Red Devils.

Left-back: Denis Irwin

Honourable mentions to John Arne Riise and Patrice Evra but it’s Denis Irwin who takes the left-back spot in this team. The former Republic of Ireland netted a couple of goals against the Reds, including a magnificent free-kick during the 1993/94 campaign.

Midfield: Steven Gerrard

Sir Alex Ferguson may not have thought that Steven Gerrard wasn’t a ‘top, top player’ - see more about that HERE - but the rest of us did. The all-action midfielder produced many memorable moments against the Red Devils.

Midfield: Roy Keane

Arguably the best captain in Premier League history, the fearsome Roy Keane used to relish playing against Liverpool. Inspired those around him and struck fear into the hearts of his opponents.

Midfield: Paul Scholes

Liverpool fans will argue that Steven Gerrard was better and Manchester United fans vice-versa, but fortunately there’s enough room for both players in this XI. Paul Scholes is undoubtedly one of the most gifted midfielders ever to play in the Premier League.

Left-wing: Ryan Giggs

The most decorated footballer in Premier League history, Ryan Giggs tormented Liverpool on several occasions.

Right-wing: Cristiano Ronaldo

Liverpool fans must have breathed a massive sigh of relief when Cristiano Ronaldo left Manchester United for Real Madrid in 2009. One of the greatest players of all time.

Centre-forward: Luis Suarez

So many world-class forwards have played for the two clubs over the course of the Premier League era - Wayne Rooney, Fernando Torres, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler, the list goes on and on - but for pure talent, Luis Suarez was probably the best.
