When it was announced that Ryan Tannehill wouldn't be able to play in the 2017 season and that his replacement would be Jay Cutler, many Miami Dolphins fans knew that it would be a challenging season for them.

The Dolphins only just made the playoffs last season with a 10-6 record in the AFC, so when Tannehill tore his ACL during the preseason, their hopes of making the playoffs this year were almost extinguished. That ambition was kept alive slightly by the signing of Cutler.

However, Miami currently sits on a 2-2 record from four games played after having their bye week moved to Week One due to Hurricane Irma. They are yet to score more than 20 points in a single game, and they were even shut out in Week Four against the New Orleans Saints.

Many Dolphins fans have blamed Cutler for this slow start to the season on offense, as they believe he no longer has the capabilities to lead an offense in the NFL. Jarvis Landry though has come out in defense of his quarterback.

The wide receiver hit back at Dolphins fans criticising Cutler, calling their behavior embarrassing according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

Landry said about Cutler: "Jay is our quarterback, and we stand by him. We don't buy into the fans - 'Who do you want to play quarterback?' I believe it's disrespectful. A man who comes out here and works his butt off, for people to not understand what's going on, or not to have even touched the field before … They don't understand the situation.

"They just want to be on Twitter or start a damned chant. It's embarrassing as a player to have fans like that. It's embarrassing."

While Landry has every right to defend one of his teammates, the Dolphins fanbase do raise a valid point about the performance of Cutler so far in the 2017 season. The 34-year-old has done little to silence his critics as he has only found the endzone three times so far this season while averaging just 156.5 passing yards through four games.

Playoff hopes are quickly fading, so Cutler needs to turn around his performances quickly to not only keep the team's postseason hopes alive but to also get the Dolphins fanbase back on his side.
