Liverpool were always going to throw the kitchen sink at Manchester United this afternoon and they haven't disappointed.

The Reds have been wading through a terrible run of form since their 4-0 thrashing of Arsenal, needing a big result against their bitter rivals to get back on track.

Jose Mourinho hasn't exactly parked the bus this time around but the Red Devils have been limited to less than 40% of possession against an energetic home side.

Mohamed Salah has proven Liverpool's biggest threat with a number of weaving runs, challenging the United defence yet continuing to lack that final product.

However, of all people, it was Joel Matip who came closest to breaking the deadlock for the Reds.

The Cameroonian defender has endured some questionable form this season and was rinsed on Twitter for a bizarre marauding run forward v United that culminated in a terrible shot at goal.

This time, though, he nearly secured himself a poacher's finish when he diverted Roberto Firmino's pinpoint cross towards goal from eight yards out.

Somehow, David de Gea managed to deflected the effort away with his feet, scrambling across his goalie to preserve his clean sheet.

The ball fell to Salah on the rebound but the Egyptian could only fizz his effort wide of the far post.

Check out the brilliant save below:

It certainly had Twitter excited and the usual declarations that De Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world did the rounds. You can't exactly blame them after such a brilliant stop.

Furthermore, even Peter Schmeichel - a contender for GOAT status - gave his sign of approval.
