When Jordan Henderson inherited the captain's armband from Steven Gerrard in 2015, Liverpool fans thought he would prove a worthy replacement.
But while the 26-year-old doesn't lack passion and aggression, doubts remain as to whether he inspires through his performances.
One word that best describes Henderson's style of play is 'safe', because he's very good at keeping possession but not so when it comes to playing incisive passes.
Against Manchester United on Saturday, for example, the vast majority of his passes were 10-yard balls either side of him.
Viewers inevitably picked up on this and mocked Henderson on social media for Joel Matip showing more creativity than him in the final third - and they were right.
On so many occasions at Anfield Henderson opted against playing a more complex pass to instead play the ball side ways and keep play ticking.
However, there was one moment in the opening 45 minutes in particular that forced Liverpool fans to question Henderson's role as captain.
In the 36th minute, Joe Gomez was completely taken out by a frustrated Romelu Lukaku, who had hardly had a touch of the ball.
So when the Belgian was easily dispossessed by Matip and then skilled by Gomez, he lashed out and deserved to be booked.
Liverpool's home support certainly thought so, but one player who didn't seem bothered by the challenge at all was Henderson.
In the video below, Henderson gets called over by Martin Atkinson but is too busy sorting out his socks. He then strolls over, listens and simply nods rather than arguing Lukaku should be carded.
As captain Henderson should have defended his teammate, yet he just accepted Atkinson's decision to not book Lukaku and didn't say a word.
HENDERSON BOTTLES IT
Henderson's reaction infuriated Liverpool fans, who slammed the England international on Twitter for completely bottling it. Check it out.
