It’s still early in the season but even the most optimistic Arsenal fans would now concede there’s no chance of seeing their side ending their long wait for the Premier League title this term. The Gunners already find themselves nine points behind league-leaders Manchester City down in sixth place.Their 2-1 loss at Watford on Saturday afternoon was Arsenal’s third league defeat from eight matches this season.Few of Arsenal’s players emerged from the Watford match with any credit, and neither did their manager.Arsene Wenger, who ignored calls from supporters to leave the Emirates Stadium towards the end of last season, again finds himself under intense pressure.

Keown lays into Mesut Ozil after Watford 2-1 Arsenal

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown singled out Mesut Ozil for criticism after the match.

The German playmaker has gone missing on too many occasions since his £42.5 million move from Real Madrid four years ago and Arsenal fans are divided over the German playmaker, whose contract at the Emirates expires next summer.

“I feel he (Ozil) was at fault for the late goal conceded,” Keown told BT Sport, per the Daily Mail. “I don't know whether there is a future for him now in this Arsenal team and I know it looks like I'm coming for him all the time but he really should have finished the game off.

“The top players are ruthless and they don't play for fun. I don't know if he's got that ruthlessness in his make-up. That ball has got to be in the back of the net (speaking on missed chance).

“That should be game over, Arsenal have won the game. People might think I’m coming for him but you've got to be clinical in those situations. Is he really bothered there?

“He's just missed an opportunity to win the game for Arsenal and everything that happens afterwards wouldn't have happened. I don't know if he cares enough or not but he's certainly not ruthless enough.

“There's only one outcome isn't there? When it comes to January surely Ozil will be gone.”

However, Keown’s damning assessment of Ozil sparked a furious response from Ian Wright.

Keown’s former Arsenal teammate couldn’t believe that Ozil had been blamed for Watford’s second goal, scored by Tom Cleverley in stoppage time.

“No way @martinkeown5 can you dig out Ozil there brother,” Wright tweeted. “Harsh. 😡”

Replying to a fan, he added: “C’mon! To blame ozil for the 2nd goal No way.”
