It’s hard to think of many more satisfying storylines in the world of sport right now than the resurgence of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
This time last year, Federer had already shut down his season. He played his last game of 2016 in July, with injuries bringing his year to a premature end.
If you had told the Swiss superstar after his defeat to Milos Raonic at Wimbledon that he would win two Grand Slams in 2017, he would have been the first to call you a liar.
Last year was a disappointment for Nadal, too. The furthest the Spaniard reached in a major was at the US Open, where he lost in the fourth round to Lucas Pouille.
So to see the pair of tennis legends currently holding all four Grand Slam titles is simply remarkable.
Federer emerged victorious at the Australian Open and at Wimbledon; Nadal prevailed at the French and US Opens.
One wonders what Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, both of whom have endured injury-riddled seasons, are thinking.
Federer beat Nadal in Shanghai Masters final
Federer and Nadal went head-to-head in the final of the Shanghai Masters on Sunday afternoon, with the 36-year-old winning in some style.
He needed just 72 minutes to beat Nadal, winning 6-4 6-3 to claim his sixth title of the year.
Federer was simply class, even winning a game by serving four straight aces.
Federer's class response to Nadal's praise
But he might saved his best moment for the post-match speeches.
Nadal heaped praise on Federer, saying: “You played a fantastic match. Amazing season.”
Federer’s response was pure class.
“It was just nice to share the court with you today,” he said.
How can you not love this guy?

Nadal: I'm pleased with my performance
Nadal won the China Open earlier in the month and his confidence hasn’t been knocked by the defeat to Federer.
“I played a fantastic tournament, having very good wins,” he reflected, per the ATP World Tour’s website.
“I'm very pleased with the way I played the whole Asian tour for me, whole China tour. Beijing, Shanghai have been a very positive two weeks for me.
“A lot of points, a lot of victories against great opponents. I come back with very good personal satisfaction with the way that I played.”
