Kevin Owens on not feeling like a top WWE star after winning a World Title

Last year after the WWE decided to do the brand split and have the WWE Draft to send WWE Superstars exclusively to either RAW or SmackDown, a new World Championship was implemented so that RAW could have a major belt on their show - the WWE Universal Title.

After a tournament on RAW, former WWE NXT Champion Finn Balor would win the inaugural strap by defeating Seth Rollins at SummerSlam. Unfortunately for Balor, however, he suffered a shoulder injury during the match that forced him out of action for the next several months. Instead a Fatal Four-Way match between Rollins, Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns, and Big Cass was held to determine the new champion.

Kevin Owens would end up winning that match with some assistance from Triple H, who turned on Seth Rollins after he had failed to live up to The Authority's expectations when they selected him to be their new face of the company.

During a recent interview on former WWE Tag Team Champions Edge and Christian's podcast, E&C's Pod Of Awesomeness, "KO" explained that even after winning the Universal Championship he still didn't feel like a top guy in WWE (quotes via Wrestling Inc.):

"To me, I thought that was it. I'm like, 'alright, I'm the Universal Champion, so, clearly, this was going to, like, solidify me as the top guy that I've always wanted to be.'

"But I don't think it really did. It didn't turn out to be what I was hoping. Like, it didn't turn out to be this thing that would make me a top guy, the way like I felt that it would."

"The whole storyline with Jericho helped me get near where I needed to go, but then I felt like I hit a little… I kind of plateaued in a way. [Edge] said [he] enjoyed that series of matches with AJ, and I'm glad you did, and, hopefully, a lot of people did as well, but I don't know if I did.

"I don't know if I can say that I did, to be honest. I don't know if I was putting out my best stuff at the time."

What are your thoughts on Owens not feeling like a top WWE Superstar after winning the Universal Title last year? Did you see "KO" as a top guy in the company after he won the strap? Or does he make good points as to why some didn't see him as a top star after securing the strap? Have YOUR say in the comments section below, and the fourth episode of GiveMeSport’s WWE podcast is here!
