Atletico Madrid's ability to keep ahold of Antoine Griezmann in the summer was somewhat remarkable, just as was what the Frenchman did against Villarreal on Saturday evening.

Rojiblancos are six points off the pace of league leaders Barcelona - having drawn two of their last six La Liga fixtures, before another stalemate against the Yellow Submarine.

The 26-year-old not only continued to prove why he's one of Europe's leading goalscorers but why Manchester United so hotly pursued him in the summer.

It seemed inevitable that the France international would move to Old Trafford in the summer, only for Atletico's transfer banner to scupper United's chances of landing the forward.

However, while it's obvious to say Griezmann is a bit of handyman in front of goal, Atletico's star man did something rather more spectacular on Saturday - despite all his work later being undone.

While Atletico have yet to lose in the league this campaign, Diego Simeone's men know they can't afford too many more draws if they are to catch Barcelona.

It was also a golden opportunity for the club to leapfrog their great city rivals, Real Madrid, if only until Los Blancos' trip to Girona on Sunday.

While Atletico fans may have gone home a little disheartened after a third draw in four games, there was one incident they will fondly remember, as can be seen below.

Griezmann's world-class cross creates opener

Griezmann found himself in enough space to receive a cross from the left, before audaciously hooking his foot under the ball with one of the most unconventional crosses you'll ever see.

But while some fans felt unsure as to whether their forward meant it not, they were left no time to dwell on it as Angel Correa lashed the ball past Villarreal's Mariano Barbosa at his near post.

Football fans go crazy at Griezmann's brilliance

And fans we're going crazy about the incident which led to the home side's opener.

It was a sweetly timed and weighted cross by Griezmann.

Certainly, if you're not going to score yourself, setting your teammate up in expert fashion is definitely the next best option.

However, Atletico were dealt a blow in the 81st minute as AC Milan loanee Carlos Bacca struck to earn the visitors a valuable point as they chase a Champions League spot.
