Lewis Hamilton has been hailed by a host of big names from the sporting world after securing his fourth world title - including Neymar and David Beckham - but not everyone is overly impressed with the manner of his victory.
Fernando Alonso, who won the world championship in 2005 and 2006, has questioned the credibility of the Mercedes driver’s latest triumph.
“It was very easy this year, no opponents,” Alonso was quoted as saying by Planet F1. “Last year he had Nico until the last race, fighting every single race.”
“This year was too easy. Mercedes four races to the end constructors’ champion, Hamilton three races before the end drivers’ champion.
“Hopefully McLaren-Renault will change this easy time for them.”
Alonso's defending against Hamilton wows fans
Many F1 fans are in agreement with the Spaniard - and they’re optimistic that the rivalry between the two drivers will intensify again next year after what happened during the Mexico Grand Prix on Sunday.
There was a gripping couple of minutes during the closing stages of the race when Alonso and Hamilton were competing for P9.
Alonso’s defending wowed viewers, with many taking to social media to praise the 36-year-old for holding off his old rival with an inferior car.

Alonso: We'll try and make it harder for Hamilton next year
“At the end with Hamilton, as soon as you start battling, you lack a bit of straightline speed,” Alonso added. “We tried to brake a little bit later every time, tried to defend the position but it was not possible.
“I think he knows, he knows. He knows also how strong the McLaren car [is] in the corners, he saw also today.
“I think next year hopefully we can give a little bit harder time to him.”
