It's been a funny few months for Chelsea manager Antonio Conte. After arriving from a fairly successful Euro 2016 campaign with Italy, the former Juventus coach looked right at home with the Blues, guiding them to the Premier League title at the first time of asking. However, a loss to Arsenal in the FA Cup final seemed to instigate a downward spiral for Conte's reign at Stamford Bridge and this season, he has endured a fair few nightmares.A 3-2 loss on the opening day to Burnley was topped by a 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace a few weeks back, but on Tuesday evening, Conte's Chelsea hit their lowest point. They made the journey to the Italian capital to face Roma and in truth, they were outplayed from the first minute by the impressive Serie A side.Stephan El Sharawaay noticed a brace and Diego Perrotti also scored to seal a famous 3-0 win, meaning that Chelsea will find it difficult to earn top spot in the group.A number of players were woeful at the Stadio Olimpico, but Blues fans believe they know the one major error that Conte made which contributed to their humiliation. The coach opted for his favoured 3-4-2-1 formation - one which served him so well last season - but it was his partnership in midfield which came under scrutiny.

THE MIDFIELD PIVOT THAT DOESN'T WORK

Summer signing Tiemoue Bakayoko was paired with Cesc Fabregas in the Chelsea engine room and to say they were overwhelmed is an understatement.

The big N'Golo Kante-shaped hole was noticeable to see for anyone watching the game.

On Twitter, the Chelsea fans were ruthless in their assessment of Conte's naivety and the performance levels of the chosen duo.

CHELSEA FANS UNLEASH THEIR FURY

It is unknown whether Kante will return for the weekend, but against Manchester United, they will really need the all-action Frenchman.

One of the big talking points ahead of the fixture will, of course, be Nemanja Matic, who was sold to United in the summer.

They could really use the Serbian midfielder at the moment and Phil Neville believes the man responsible for his sale at Chelsea needs sacking.

MATIC'S SALE A HUGE ISSUE

“What's gone wrong for Chelsea? One word. Matic,” Neville told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It's as simple as that. The minute they sold Nemanja Matic was a mistake.

“When you had Matic sat in front of you, alongside Kante, there was protection.

“Whoever made that decision needs sacking. That is one of the poorest decisions I have ever seen in the Premier League.

“If you ask any of those Chelsea players who they would want back, they would say Matic.

“You replace him with someone who is going to do the same job! Bakayoko is not that player! He is not a holding midfield player.

“They didn't replace Matic. I wouldn't have let him out of the building, I would have chained him to the training ground walls!”
