Earlier this year Cesaro suffered what was probably the nastiest in-ring injury in professional wrestling so far this year.
At the WWE's No Mercy pay-per-view (PPV) event a few months ago, the team of The Bar (Cesaro and Sheamus) defended their then-RAW Tag Team Championships against the reunited team of Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose. After putting on an epic back-and-forth contest, it was Rollins and Cesaro who emerged as new champions.
During the match, however, Cesaro suffered a nasty injury that resulted in his front teeth being lost. Rollins was catapulted into the ring post and hit his teeth on it hard, knocking them out and leaving the "Swiss Superman" with a bloody mouth.
Now Cesaro wears a mouth guard on WWE TV and can't talk correctly whenever he's cutting a promo. He recently did an interview with the Baltimore Sun to discuss a number of professional wrestling topics, including his nasty injury.
Cesaro revealed what was going through his mind when the injury first happened (quotes via IWNerd):
“Well, the first thing that went through my head was, “Ow, that really hurt.” There was a lot of blood. Then, the doctor came over and checked on me.
"I said that I was all right. He was ready to look for the teeth around the ring, but I had to tell him that no, they were in there, just up higher. That was not a pleasant experience
“I don’t have to do anything. Safety is always paramount at WWE. But, I knew that I was fine otherwise. It hurt like hell, but this was a tag-team title match.
"This was very important to me. I guess I’m just a tough cookie”
