Not all of the signings Brendan Rodgers made during his three years in charge of Liverpool panned out, but the £10 million acquisition of Emre Can was undoubtedly one of his best purchases.

Can, a highly-rated 20-year-old back in June 2014, had caught the eye during his one season with Bayer Leverkusen after leaving Bayern Munich.

"Emre is an exciting young talent and I'm delighted he's chosen Liverpool for the next phase of his development and growth as a player," Rodgers told Liverpool’s official website at the time. "He has recognised that we are a club that improves and nurtures exciting, ambitious players and I'm looking forward to seeing him take those next steps forward for us."

It didn’t take Can long to establish his status as one of Liverpool’s first-choice central midfielders.

The Germany international made his 143rd appearance for the Reds on Wednesday night, against Maribor and the Champions League, and netted his 11th goal for the club midway through the second half.

Can exchanged passes with James Milner and then produced a classy finish from the edge of the box.

Liverpool fan drops surprise stat on Twitter

A Liverpool fan pointed out this morning that Can has now scored the same number of goals as Dietmar Hamann, who spent seven seasons at Anfield during the early-to-mid 2000s.

@LiamBekker wrote on Twitter: “Emre Can has now scored the same number of goals for Liverpool as compatriot @DietmarHamann (11) in 140 fewer matches. #LFC”

Hamann reacts with salty tweet

However, this tweet prompted a rather salty response from Hamann.

The former Liverpool midfielder, who retired in 2011 reacted: “He also won 8 trophies less in 140 fewer matches.”

He's got a point

He’s got a point, though.

Hamann won two FA Cups, two League Cups, the UEFA Cup, the UEFA Champions League and two UEFA Super Cups during his spell on Merseyside.

Can has yet to win anything with Liverpool. Well, apart from the club’s Young Player of the Season award during the 2015-16 campaign.
