Jimmy Ryan volleyed home a late winner as Accrington boosted their play-off hopes with a 3-2 victory over Morecambe.

Ryan struck with seven minutes remaining, the midfielder giving Barry Roche no chance after latching onto a looping ball on the edge of the area.

Morecambe's Dave Artell and Accrington top-scorer Bobby Grant had earlier scored two goals apiece in an entertaining encounter.

Fellow promotion hopefuls Morecambe have not defeated Stanley since 2004 but took the lead after 17 minutes when Neil Wainwright's left-wing cross found captain Artell who slid home from six yards out.

Stanley grabbed a deserved equaliser after 29 minutes. Roche denied Michael Symes from close range but the ball ran loose for Grant to blast home.

A minute later Morecambe keeper Roche kept out a goalbound effort from Symes with his foot.

The visitors regained the lead nine minutes after the interval when a Craig Stanley free-kick was touched on by Artell for his second goal of the match and third of the season.

But Grant then doubled his tally with a curled free-kick from the edge of the area, his 15th goal of the season.

And although Roche pulled off superb saves to deny Symes and Luke Joyce he could do nothing about Ryan's late strike.
