Pawel Abbott's first-half strike earned Oldham a valuable 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Tranmere.

The forward headed home Dale Stephens' cross to grab the only goal of the game in the 41st minute.

And Rovers were unable to respond in a largely forgettable clash at Prenton Park.

Oldham enjoyed the better of the first half and Dean Furman saw a deflected shot well saved by Luke Daniels before Rovers forward Ian Thomas-Moore blazed wide at the other end.

Abbott saw one shot blocked and another deflected for a corner before eventually opening the scoring shortly before the interval.

A bright start to the second half brought no joy for the Merseysiders and it needed a fingertip save by Daniels to deny Danny Whittaker a second Oldham goal in the 52nd minute.

Rovers stepped up the pace thereafter, but Chris Shuker's header was saved easily by Dean Brill.

The Latics stopper then saved twice in quick succession from substitute Marvin Sordell to condemn the hosts to a sixth home defeat of the season.
