WWE are deep into their build-up for Survivor Series with several matches already revealed for the Raw vs SmackDown pay-per-view.
Two traditional Survivor Series Elimination matches, men and women, and four Champion vs Champion matches were announced for the show a couple of weeks ago by Raw general manager Kurt Angle, including the match between the show's two main champions.
Universal Champion Brock Lesnar will take on WWE Champion Jinder Mahal (or AJ Styles depending on how their match on Tuesday night goes) at the pay-per-view on November 19, and a big name is speculated to be the special guest referee for that match.
Reports over the past few weeks have stated John Cena will be the special guest referee in the match between The Beast and The Modern Day Maharaja at Survivor Series, but this is yet to be confirmed by the WWE themselves.
While WWE fans will be happy to see Cena back in the WWE for the first time since his match against Roman Reigns at No Mercy, the reason why he will be a special guest referee at Survivor Series has really been addressed.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, via Ringside News, The Leader of the Cenation will be a special guest referee in the Lesnar vs Mahal match in order to set up a future match with WWE Champion.
Meltzer has speculated the 16-time World Champion will screw Mahal over in the match, allowing Lesnar to pick up the win, setting up a match between the two for the WWE title at a later date, most likely at WrestleMania 34 next year in New Orleans.
At this match at WrestleMania 34, many would expect Cena to come out on top and win the WWE Championship, which would make him surpass Ric Flair for the most world titles in wrestling history as recognized by the WWE.
How WWE will make Cena the special guest referee for this match remains to be seen, but we could get an indication as to how during this week's episode of SmackDown Live, where Mahal is defending the WWE title against AJ Styles.
