What Slaven Bilic did with West Ham's squad after being sacked is genuinely heartbreaking

After weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future, Slaven Bilic was finally axed by West Ham United on Monday afternoon.

The Croatians reign at the east London club was one of two extremes; his first season in charge was a resounding success, with the Hammers close to finishing in the European spots.

However, last season, after a big move to the Olympic Stadium, the wheels started falling off as West Ham just managed to escape relegation.

Dimitri Payet's acrimonious departure certainly didn't help, but neither did some of Bilic's decisions in their new home.

He was given one final chance this season and he failed to deliver. The Hammers haven't won in the Premier League since September, with a Carabao Cup victory over Tottenham the only thing prolonging his stay at the club for a few weeks.

A disappointing 2-2 draw away at misfiring Crystal Palace was followed up by a thrashing at the hands of Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp's side running out 4-1 winners.

It was the final straw, but what Bilic did on the day of his sacking is genuinely heartbreaking.

BILIC'S FINAL ACT AT WEST HAM

As reported by the Mirror, the Croatian manager actually took it upon himself to call members of West Ham's squad to ask them where he went wrong as their boss.

That's right, he wanted some constructive criticism, not exactly the most common route taken by a sacked manager in the footballing world.

However, his astonishing move may have proved beneficial for any future job he takes as the players didn't hold back in providing him some much needed pointers.

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID ABOUT BILIC

The squad were quick to point out that he had been nowhere near tough enough on them during his tenure.

Poor time-keeping wasn't punished, players used the training pitch after hours without being sanctioned and the quality of training was also called into question.

It means that new manager David Moyes has a number of key things to remedy and if he does so, the former Everton manager may avoid another nightmare like he suffered at Manchester United.

SAM ALLARDYCE ALSO BLAMES THE PLAYERS

The former Hammers boss recognised that Bilic had made some errors, but also argued that the players must carry some of the burden.

“He didn’t live up to the expectation this season,” said Big Sam. “Bilic paid the price for that, the players let him down badly.”
