On last night's (Tues. November 8, 2017) episode of SmackDown Live WWE pulled off one of the most shocking moves of the year.

Jinder Mahal shocked the professional wrestling world when he defeated Randy Orton to capture the WWE Championship. "The Modern Day Maharaja" has been reigning as SmackDown Live's top champion for several months now, with his title reign seeming to be scheduled to last for quite some time.

Mahal as defended his title against Orton several times, as well as former New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) star Shinsuke Nakamura. He recently sparked a new rivalry with AJ Styles which initially was believed to serve as a warm up for his match with Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series.

In a shocking turn of events, Styles actually pulled off the completely unexpected by defeating Mahal in the main event of SmackDown Live last night to win the WWE Championship. "The Phenomenal One" will now take on "The Beast" in Houston on November 19th.

Bryan Alvarez took to Wrestling Observer Radio to note that he had received word from someone in India several months ago that WWE had been advertising Jinder Mahal as a two-time WWE Champion for their upcoming tour.

Meltzer responded to this by claiming that the ad had nothing to do with the decision to make Styles champion last night, as the decision to make the title change wasn't made until a week ago. Meltzer himself didn't find out about the decision until the morning of SmackDown.

Those who needed to know about the WWE Title change weren't informed on the move until earlier this week. Meltzer did note that WWE "absolutely" planned to have Mahal as WWE Champion for the India tour, and that still can happen as AJ Styles currently isn't advertised for the tour.

More details surrounding the move are likely to come to light over the next few days, but given that Styles was initially scheduled to take on Rusev last night for a spot on SmackDown Lives's Survivor Series team, it's likely this was a last-second decision.

What are your thoughts on WWE making the call to put the WWE Championship back on AJ Styles? Do you think that Styles could carry the championship through to WrestleMania next year?
