People are still talking about the shocking title change this past week.

AJ Styles defeated Jinder Mahal to win the WWE Championship on this week’s episode of SmackDown Live in Manchester, England at the Manchester Arena on the USA Network.

Now, Styles is slated to face Universal Champion Brock Lesnar at the upcoming Survivor Series PPV (pay-per-view) event in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center and will air on the WWE Network and some traditional pay-per-view outlets. Both Raw and SmackDown brands will be featured.

Former WWE writer Vince Russo was not happy with the decision to take the title of of Mahal. Here is what he had to say:

“I don’t understand for the life of me why you would put the belt on somebody for six months, and then take it off of them without really rising their stock, making them the main-eventers that they should have been, and probably now letting them stumble back into the sea of mediocrity.”

Mahal has been with the WWE since 2010 when he signed a developmental deal with them and was sent to their Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) territory.

In April of 2011, Mahal made his main roster debut and would eventually find himself as a member of the Three Man Band (3MB) trio alongside Drew McIntyre and Heath Slater. In 2014, however, his run with the WWE came to an end when he was released from his deal.

He would return to the independent circuit for two years, where he would reinvent himself creatively and physically, before being brought back to WWE around the time of the Superstar Shake-Up.

After some time on RAW upon his return, the shake-up moved him over to Tuesday nights on SmackDown Live.

Mahal would win a Six-Pack Challenge match that earned him the status as No. 1-contender for the WWE Championship, which was then-held by Randy Orton who defeated Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 33 for the strap.

As of this writing, there’s no word yet on what WWE has planned for Mahal at the upcoming Survivor Series PPV event or when he will get his rematch for the WWE Title.
