Before deciding that Juventus was the best football club to continue his development, Paul Pogba made seven appearances for Manchester United’s first team. The French midfielder appeared in the Premier League, League Cup and Europa League during the 2011-12 campaign but wasn’t getting enough first-team opportunities for his liking. He subsequently rejected the chance to sign a contract extension with the Red Devils and, instead, completed a move to Juventus, where he cemented his status as one of Europe’s best midfielders over the coming years. The majority of United fans were immensely disappointed when Pogba left Old Trafford. They knew this was a player with huge potential. But still, few supporters saw him developing into one of the world’s most sought-after central midfielders so soon after his departure. His rise to superstardom was rapid.

Pogba in 2011: Gifted but very raw

During the 2011-12 season, Pogba looked gifted but extremely raw.

And this is demonstrated perfectly by this video of his individual highlights after coming on as a substitute against Crystal Palace in the League Cup back in November 2011.

Pogba entered the fray as a 64th-minute substitute but was unable to prevent United slumping to an embarrassing 2-1 defeat against their Championship opponents.

He showed glimpses of his quality but also made a series of mistakes.

If anything, he looked a little too eager to impress - and perhaps that’s understandable given the fact he didn’t feel Sir Alex Ferguson completely trusted him at the time.

What Twitter was saying about Pogba at the time

But what was being said about Pogba by United fans and non-United fans alike on Twitter during and after this match?

We’ve taken a look through the archives and some of the tweets now look very, very silly indeed…

It's safe to assume they've all changed their tune since then.
