One of the best fights of 2017 came in September in Las Vegas, when undefeated Gennady Golovkin fought his way to a draw against Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez.

Though the split decision was fraught with controversy, it was a good fight between the two middleweights, proving why they are two of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world.

As negotiations continue to take place about a rematch, nothing seems to be imminent, which is concerning for fans who want to see the two superstars in the same ring again.

However, according to ESPN Deportes, Golovkin, who was recently in Mexico, declared that he is ready for the rematch and would like to fight Alvarez again as soon as May:

"I do not know if there will be a second fight, rather we should ask him, I'm ready, I have my championships, I'll be ready for May," said Golovkin.

In fact, Golovkin added, he'd love to fight Alvarez on his home turf in Mexico, saying Estadio Azteca would be a great location for a rematch:

"Actually, it seems like a great idea. I would absolutely love to fight at Estadio Azteca, I feel ready. If Canelo wants, of course, I'm ready, we should ask him," he said.

It would be a shame if we never get to see these two middleweights square off again, so their handlers need to make sure a deal gets done, and soon.

Golovkin explained that he wants to unify the middleweight titles with a win over Alvarez, which is why he's pushing for a rematch, among other potential 2017 fights he's considering:

"I would love to fight three or four times a year but I know it's difficult, if Canelo does not want the fight obviously I would love to unify, I can not put pressure on the WBO champion but if he wants, I will be willing because my dream is to have all titles," he said.

He added he feels like he should have been named the winner in September's bout, but wouldn't go as far as to say he thinks he could knock out Alvarez in a rematch:

"I think I just need more time (to beat him), I feel like I won the first fight and I'm not going to say I'm going to knock him out because this is a tough sport, and I think it will be a tough fight for both of us," he said.

It remains to be seen if a deal gets done, but it's clear there's plenty of interest in seeing the star Kazakh fighter in the same ring as the Mexican superstar sometime in 2018.
