David Haye has pulled out of next month’s heavyweight rematch against Tony Bellew in London after suffering a freak arm injury in training.

The former heavyweight world champion, 37, has undergone surgery on the injury and expressed his bitter disappointment in a statement published on matchroomboxing.com.

“I am devastated to announce my much-anticipated rematch against Tony Bellew has been postponed until March 24 or May 5, subject to scheduling,” Haye said. “Despite the recent injury rumours, I was in perfect condition with an incredibly strong training camp, currently weighing lighter than I have for more than five years, I couldn’t wait to get back in the ring. I was ready to rewrite the ending of the Haye Bellew saga.”

He then revealed how he sustained the injury.

“Unfortunately, after a freak accident during a stair conditioning session, which I’ve done with no incident hundreds of times, I lost my footing, slipped, so instinctively grabbed the bannister to stop myself toppling down the stairwell, in doing so I somehow managed to damage my bicep in the process,” he added.

Bellew's reaction on Twitter

Bellew reacted to the news with a sad-faced emoji - how very 2017 - on Twitter.

However, there’s already one boxer desperate to take Haye’s place - and no prizes for guessing who that is.

“Who wants to see me & @TonyBellew go at it heavyweight style?” Tyson Fury tweeted. “Manchester vs Liverpool northwests finest! 👍🏻😎🥊 #bellendbellew @EddieHearn”

Notice that Fury is referring to Bellew by the same uncomplimentary nickname created by Haye.

Sending a tweet directly to Bellew, he then added: “@TonyBellew @EddieHearn @ringmagazine do u want this⬇️ if so sign the contract girls. I promise to destroy the bomber.🙏🏻🥊 “

He then sent yet another tweet minutes later.

"@EddieHearn @TonyBellew you both know what I want so sign the deal & stop being bitches the pair of you🤝"

And then sent this...

And then he revealed how he plans to KO Bellew...

The 29-year-old didn’t stop there, either.

Nope, as if that wasn’t enough, he’s also posted a video to social media calling Bellew out.
