Arsenal closed in on the top of the Barclays Premier League with a 3-1 win over relegation-threatened Burnley, but saw captain Cesc Fabregas withdrawn with what appeared a hamstring problem.

The midfielder had volleyed the Gunners, who are now level on points with Chelsea having played a match more, in front before being withdrawn as a precaution.

Burnley equalised at the start of the second half through David Nugent, before a fine finish from England forward Theo Walcott and Andrey Arshavin's stoppage-time strike sealed victory.

The breakthrough came after 35 minutes through a superbly-crafted effort. Samir Nasri made space for himself on the edge of the Burnley box, before chipping the ball over the defence.

It had the perfect weight for Fabregas to get ahead of his marker and volley through goalkeeper Brian Jensen's legs for his 17th goal of the season.

Burnley - who had picked up just one point away all season - equalised at the start of the second half through Nugent.

A lumped clearance from Emmanuel Eboue was headed long and back towards the penalty area by Clarets defender Leon Cort - and as the defence hesitated - the ball bounced right through to Nugent, who calmly lifted it over Manuel Almunia.

Arsenal suddenly had more urgency but were now faced with a determined 10-man rearguard.

Arshavin came on for Tomas Rosicky as Arsenal looked to up the tempo and blazed a good chance wide while it was a day to forget for Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner who missed his last of a string of gilt-edged chances before being replaced by Eduardo.

Steven Thompson fired over with five minutes left as Burnley looked for a leveller but Arshavin sealed it with a clinical finish in stoppage time.
